Water Conservation Tips for Summer 2018

Last summer Mother Nature brought many days of rain to Long Island. Water usage was at an unusually low level during the peak-pumping months of May through September, keeping the District’s infrastructure from being overworked. We can’t predict the weather for this summer, yet we can offer the following tips on what you can do to help with water conservation this season.

IRRIGATION TIPS

Flowers are blooming, the days are longer and Long Islanders are ready for warmer weather and all the greenery this time of year brings. While we strive to keep our lawns and landscapes beautiful and lush, we ask to follow these helpful conservation tips pertaining to lawn irrigation:

  • Test each zone for leaks and have your irrigation system reviewed and tested by a professional.
  • If you spring a leak or find a busted line, don’t hesitate to fix it.
  • Turn the system on during the day to see what you’re watering. Concrete, pavers and asphalt don’t require water.
  • Check all your sprinkler heads and replace any cracked, chipped or worn components.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY GARDEN

Saving water and using it wisely helps Long Island’s sole source aquifer and will result in a hardy garden. For you gardeners out there, here are some helpful recommendations for you to consider:

  • Choose groundcovers that require less watering such as lavender, daylilies, marigolds and zinnias.
  • Install a spring-loaded shutoff nozzle on each garden hose.
  • Start a compost pile and add it to your garden. Mix in some wood chips or peat moss to boost water retention.
  • A slow-drip irrigation system will help avoid over-watering and save money on your water bill.
  • Water before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. for best retention results.
  • Keep the length of your lawn approximately 2 inches long to help reduce evaporation and use less water.
  • Leave grass clippings on the lawn to retain water and help your grass grow thicker.

EyeOnWater® APP – MONITORING YOUR WATER USAGE

SFWD has implemented and installed state-of-the-art water meters throughout the District. These new water meters are extremely accurate and precise in reading water usage, and consumers can now monitor their own water consumption.

Simply download the EyeOnWater® App through the Apple App Store or Google Play

and set up a user profile on your phone, mobile device or desktop. Once a user profile is setup, you can monitor your water usage hourly, daily, weekly – monitor for potential leaks, and save money on your water bills. Be sure to protect your equipment. If the cellular end point attached to your home is broken or damaged, please call the District for a replacement.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO CONSUMERS: Hydrant Flushing Program Begins: April 8th – April 20th

Hydrant FlushingSouth Farmingdale Water District will be conducting our hydrant flushing program from April 8, 2018 through April 20, 2018   Hydrants within the District will be flushed from midnight (12:00 a.m.) through 6:00 a.m. This is an important part of our annual maintenance program as flushing helps to clean out harmless sedimentation from the water distribution system.

NOTE TO ALL CONSUMERS:
PLEASE CHECK YOUR WATER BEFORE DOING LAUNDRY OR DRINKING TAP WATER AS THE WATER MAY BECOME DISCOLORED DURING THIS TIME.

If water is discolored, running the cold water for several minutes should clear it up.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call the District at (516) 249-3330. Our office is open Monday through Friday (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 a.m.).

Winter is Here! Eight Winterizing Tips To Follow This Season.

Old Man Winter can be brutally tough on homes, and depending on where you live—his icy cold breath can create a lot of expensive damage. Here are some ways to minimize potential damage by gaining an overall big picture of your home or business.

  1. Examine the condition of your current plumbing and piping…inside and outside. Identify the pipes that will be most affected or most vulnerable to freezing and protect them with insulation to prevent freezing and subsequent thawing and/or bursting.
  2. Always know the location of your emergency shut-off valve and outdoor pipes in case of an emergency.
  3. Disconnect and drain all outside hoses to prevent freezing. Outdoor hoses should be stored where they will not freeze to prevent cracking. Replacing hoses can be expensive!
  4. Turn off all outside spigots from inside your house then drain the lines and leave the spigots open. Foam insulation covers are available for outside spigots.
  5. Shut down and thoroughly drain all lawn sprinkler systems.
  6. Check meter pit covers to assure that they are securely bolted down and intact.
  7. Attention Snowbirds! If you are snow birding to warmer climates, or going away for a lengthy time during the winter, you might consider shutting off your water pump and water heater.
  8. This winter, keep an eye out for any fire hydrant that may become buried in the wake of a plow. Always remember to keep fire hydrants free from snow and debris.

Well Site Construction and Renovations Underway

As South Farmingdale Water District (SFWD) nears the completion of its 5-Year Capital Improvement Campaign, many strategic initiatives were set in place to improve upon pressure and flow throughout the District.

In a continuing effort to meet demand, our planned renovation and construction at Plant No. 1 (Well 1-4) will go a long way toward achieving these objectives. The new construction and renovation of the well began in Spring 2017. Bringing the well back online gives the District flexibility and redundancy throughout the system. The well will draw water from 758 feet deep into the largest of Long Island’s aquifers, the Magothy, and will have a production capacity of 1,200 gallons per minute (GPM), or 2 million gallons per day! Equally impressive are the cost saving numbers.

Since the new well will require iron removal, (a very common situation in water throughout Long Island), the decision to share existing resources at Plant 1 makes construction and implementation far more cost-effective. The project is on budget and is scheduled for completion in early 2018.

SFWD installs three iron filtration tanks at Plant No. 1 treatment building. The iron vessels will soon serve Well 1-4 which is under construction and will be fully operational in early 2018.
